Front Row ELA Benchmark Assessments make it easy for teachers to track student performance and progress throughout the school year and make informed decisions about their teaching.
The ELA Benchmark Assessments test students on all grade-level Common Core ELA standards for fiction and nonfiction text, writing, speaking & listening, and language (grammar). Each assessment contains multiple reading passages in addition to stand-alone questions, and will take students around an hour to complete.
To assign an assessment to your students, click on “Assign ELA” on the left navigation bar on your Teacher Dashboard, and then click on the blue “+Add An Assignment” button at the top of the page. Then click on the orange "Benchmark Assessments" button.
First, pick the grade level of the assessment you'd like to assign. ELA Benchmark Assessments are available for grades 3 through 8.
Then, choose the students to whom you'd like to assign the assessment.
Finally, choose the version of the assessment you want to assign. You can see which you have or have not already assigned. There are several different versions at each grade level so that teachers can administer different assessments throughout the year.
Once you've customized your benchmark assessment, click the green "Assign" button.
The assignment will then be sent directly to students on their accounts. It will also appear on your list of ELA assignments, where you can track progress towards completion.
Detailed reporting for ELA Benchmark Assessments is also available on Front Row. To learn more about these reports, click here.
Teachers use ELA Benchmarks to decide:
- What standards and skills to teach or reteach
- What concepts to cover with the entire class
- Which students to pull for small group instruction
- Which students to select for additional reading intervention
- What skills to focus on for state testing
Teachers can also use these assessments to familiarize students with computerized testing. The formatting of the ELA Benchmark Assessments mirror that of state testing tools like the SBAC and PARCC. The reading passages appear alongside comprehension questions, each with a scrollbar to navigate the page. Question types include multiple choice, multiple answer, and free response questions in which students need to pull evidence from the text.
Front Row's ELA Benchmark Assessments are a great way to track student performance and progress in ELA over the course of the year.
